Concerns about school entry changes

Complex criteria

Currently, a detailed code prevents the brightest or richest students schools cherry-picking.

Complex admission criteria can be used but for example a child's religion, how far it from a school of life, or if they have already visited siblings.

Ministers want what they describe, as confusing procedures to simplify, and a draft paper to be published.

Charities fear that could change under the Government's plans.

Sam Murray, of the Council for education, said: "We are concerned that a simplified code could mean, [a] diluted code and this could lead, lose some of the recent changes which have made the system more transparent and fair."

The judges powers are limiting and reducing local control to the changes expected, but some groups to the process still further simplified.

Professor Sheila Lawlor, the Politeia think tank, said: "It is a step in the right direction."

"I welcome drive, that the process on the school and the parents - is where it must be, but it needs to go further."

"We must take local authorities of the authorisation procedure so that parents directly to school, can apply, so that they this decision in concert with the teachers of the school-, which is make what matters."

The Government said that his reforms would bring higher standards and better choice.

A spokesman said: "we want to improve discipline, give more freedom heads, teaching to win the best graduates expand academies, you set up new schools, and we will not hesitate to step, to make it weak schools."
