Some government departments leading the research into whether the semi-arid Karoo region could be damaged by Fracking.
"Cabinet has made it very clear that this clean environment with all environmental aspects will be not compromised," Government spokesman Jimmy Mányi said in a statement.
Shell told the BBC that it wanted the Government, the statement to clarify issues.
