Haiti confirmed victory Martelly

April 21, 2011 last updated at 17: 43 GMT Michel Martelly on 21 April 2011 Mr Martelly says he would like to close with the opposition popular Haitian singer Michel Martelly officially declared the next President of Haiti was.

Official results showed that Mr. Martelly won 67.6% of the vote in the runoff election on 20 March, against former first lady Mirlande Manigat.

After the results were made public Mr Martelly said, that he would seek in harmony with the opposition work marred by violent protests and allegations of fraud after an election.

He takes office 14 May.

Deadly protests

Only hours after he was declared the winner, tried Mr Martelly rally support through his Twitter account.

"Let's get our tools and clean up of the work of our country" he tweeted.

But despite Mr Martelly, there were calls for unity, several violent incidents in a number of Haitian cities.

A spokesman for the UN police, which patrols, much of Haiti said that fire was set on a government building protesters in Belladere in Central Haiti.

Protests took place also in Leogane, South of Port-au-Prince. At least one person is reported to have been killed that.

The protests followed the release by the Electoral Commission of some results of parliamentary elections, which were on the same day as the presidential run-off.

The results suggest that outgoing President René Préval ruling party INITE (Unity) remains the dominant force in the Haitian legislature, though it seems to have lost his parliamentary majority.
