CIA reveals invisible ink and toenail secrets

During World War II spies engraved messages on toe nails and used lemon juice, invisible letter writing, reveal secret documents published by the CIA.

The six documents, among the oldest secret papers by the Agency, expose a set of espionage techniques.

The almost century-old records contain instructions "to suspect and examine any thing".

Recent advances in technology have made it possible, that said the CIA documents release.

A document recommends soaking a handkerchief, or any other stronger substance, nitrate, soda, and strength, to make a portable invisible ink solution.

Setting a solution would publish the treated handkerchief in water, which could then be used to write secret messages, say the records.

A document written in 1914 in French, is a German formula for the production of secret ink, suggesting that French spies had managed to crack the hostile code available.

"Spies and smugglers"

A memorandum, collected by a handwriting expert in California, is invisible messages on the human body painting.
