Bomber kills Afghan police Chief

Taliban spokesman Yusuf Ahmadi said one of its members carried out the attack, and gave AFP a slightly different account of the events.

"He had disguised himself as a police officer and the police fired head with his pistol, embraced him and then ignited themselves," he said.

Mr Khan is the most recent victim of an assassination campaign launched by the rebels in recent months.

Kandahar is considered the spiritual home of the Taliban, and has experienced in recent years some of the worst of the violence in Afghanistan.
